Poor standards or complete lack of maintenance are a major underlying cause of accidents in the catering industry and electrical appliances are no exception. In a commercial catering setting, appliances are in a very demanding environment, therefore the IET (Institute of Engineering and Technology) recommends more frequent inspections for catering equipment in kitchens. Although the IET advises 12 months, it may be necessary to carry these inspections out more frequently in line with individual manufacturer instructions, demands on appliances and environments in which they are situated.
Faulty electrical equipment and overloading electrical circuits can not only present a problem in terms of electrocution, these faults can also be a common fire hazard. Faults in plugs or cables and poor maintenance of heated food trolleys are common examples of electrical faults leading to accidents which can be avoided by having an Alecta engineer visit to carry out our electrical safety inspections.
At Alecta we can assist with these inspections and by carrying out and providing you with a comprehensive report on the appliance/installations. During the safety inspections any faults and/or advisories will be documented and a solution offered to ensure safety standards are maintained. Our skilled engineers will identify and make recommendations for improvements to efficiency, safety and reliability. Many installations should have suitable RCD/RCBO protection. If it is found that the appliance does not have suitable protection, or it cannot be verified that it does, this would be noted on our engineer’s report and in addition discussed with the responsible person on site.
Our inspection consists of;
- Formal visual inspection, every 12 months.
- Checking the condition of electrical equipment and fittings.
- Inspecting and maintaining electrical equipment and fittings
- Visually inspecting according to the type of equipment and the environment in which it is used.
- Combined inspection and testing by an electrically competent person
